While Mitch Kupchak said earlier this week that he expects Nick Young to opt-out of his contract after this season, Swaggy P’s agent says that doesn’t necessarily mean he wants to head elsewhere.
“Nick wants to be a Laker,” Young’s agent, Mark Bartelstein told Mark Medina from the L.A. Daily News. “But his focus right now is to get healthy, get back on the court soon and finish the rest of the season.”
Young has been a surprise to most Laker fans this season. Somehow, the 6’7″ scorer had garnered the reputation of being a poor-man’s J.R. Smith. However, so far, Swaggy P has been great.
Young has averaged 17.9 points in 39 games off the bench so far this season and is nothing like the selfish player he’s been made out to be. Nick has been a willing passer, has put in effort on the defense end and has just been an overall joy to watch and read about every day – I mean, how can you not like a guy who suggests the Lakers lead a “Stay Swag” campaign this summer?
He always has a smile on his face, and although this game is all about putting the ball in the basket – something he can obviously do, too – being a great teammate and someone who lightens up the locker room is always a huge plus.
There’s obviously mutual interest between the Lakers and Young to get a deal done this offseason if he does indeed opt-out of his contract. The Lakers are set to have a lot of cap space this summer and would be able to offer Young a decent pay day, though they’ll definitely be conservative when it comes to their spending.
As usual, it will come down to how much money Young’s being offered elsewhere and whether the Lakers will be able to match that amount without hurting their future flexibility.
Hopefully, though, Young will be wearing purple and gold for many years to come.
