Earlier, we posted about Pau Gasol, and how he was becoming slightly unhappy with his situation in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday night, they shared dinner together in Manhatten Beach, according to the Los Angeles Times:
“It was to make sure we’re in the same boat,” Gasol said in a quiet moment Thursday after the Lakers’ practice. “We’re trying to reach the same goal. Let’s communicate. Hopefully, we can meet halfway on some points.”
I love this move by D’Antoni. Gasol was obviously growing uneasy with his role and Mike wanted to hear what he had to say and smooth things over.
D’Antoni also told Pau that he would no longer be benched down the stretch:
D’Antoni told Gasol he would no longer be benched in crucial situations, according to a person familiar with the conversation.
Mike said the conversation was “great” and he enjoyed talking to Gasol because “he’s a very intelligent basketball player”.
Gasol was said to have told D’Antoni where he’d like to get the ball – which will mostly be in the post – so it’ll be interesting if the head coach changes up his system a bit to get Pau the looks he wants on offense.
