In an interview with SLAM, which mainly focussed on his endorsement deal with ACUVUE, Dwight Howard revealed that his ex-teammate, Tony Battie, is among the people he goes to for advice. This means that Battie will likely talk to Howard about his free agency decision this July:
SLAM: You’ve got a big decision coming up with free agency, how important is it to have someone like Tony Battie when making choices like that?
DH: It’s very important that you have people that can give you their advice and tell you what they think about a certain situation. But at the end of the day, that decision totally comes down to me, and whenever you make decisions in life you have people advise you, but you have to go with what’s best for you and what makes yourself happy. You can’t really worry about what anybody else thinks about it. You just have to really focus on what’s important.
Also a big man, Battie played for the Orlando Magic from 2004-08, giving him a chance to get to know young Howard when he first came into the league. Battie will be just one of many people possibly trying to influence Howard’s decision, though in the end, he has to make the best decision for himself and his family. While the Los Angeles Lakers can offer the most money to Howard this summer, other destinations may make more sense to Dwight from a basketball and comfort standpoint.
Free agency officially begins July 1.
