In the summer of 2014, the Lakers will have heaps of cap space to offer free agents. They also have the L.A. sunshine on their side, the bright lights of Hollywood and the Lakers’ legacy, but Jeanie Buss has something else up her sleeve.
In a recent interview with ESPN Los Angeles radio, Jeanie revealed that she was interested in taking the Lakers back to Hawaii next year for training camp, and could use the trip as a way to help convince free agents to sign with the team:
[pullquote]”It’s time for the Lakers to get back to Hawaii for pre-season. We had to go to Europe, then we’re going to China this year, and so the timing just seems right – time to go back to Hawaii.
That’s what I’m thinking [about going back for training camp] – if we’re going to be a big player in the free agent market, what a nice thing to say to a free agent, ‘Hey, the first thing you’ll do is go to Hawaii.'”[/pullquote]
Of course, the Lakers have been to Hawaii many times in the past, so going back would be no big deal for them as an organization, but still, letting prospective free agents know that they could be easing their way back into the grind of the NBA season while in tropical paradise could be attractive to some players.
Phil Jackson spent many a training camp with the Lakers in Hawaii over the years, too.
