When Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss eventually tie the knot, Jim Buss and the legendary coach will finally be family – at least on paper. However, there’s a difference between being legally related to someone and actually considering them as a part of your clan.
In a recent interview with ESPN Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Lakers‘ vice president of basketball operations said he considers Phil just that: family. Buss also once again reiterated his willingness to hire his future brother-in-law as a consultant for the team:
“I consider Phil family. That’s how I look at him,” he said. “If he wants to work with me on a consultant basis, I’m all for it.”
While it’s good to know that Jim and Phil are apparently on good terms, the chances of Jackson returning to the Lakers while Mike D’Antoni is still in town seem unlikely; there is a definite clash in philosophies between the two, so it would be hard to imagine that the pair could work together successfully on a daily basis.
Besides, Jeanie tells Phil pretty much everything – and Jeanie talks to Jim, Mitch and co. on a regular basis – so Jackson’s thoughts are probably already being heard, anyway.
It still would be cool to have Phil return to the organization, though…
