Jim Buss on Dwight Howard: “He was never really a Laker, he was just passing through”

Last season, most Lakers fans were ready to accept Dwight Howard, but it didn’t seem like he was ready to accept them. Did he ever really want to be a Laker? Did he ever truly embrace the purple and gold? Jim Buss doesn’t think so.

According to Ric Bucher who did a piece on the Buss family for the Hollywood Reporter, Jim feels that Howard was “never really a Laker”:

[pullquote]After Howard bolted, Jim turned on his former star, saying he wasn’t surprised or dismayed. “He was never really a Laker,” says Jim. “He was just passing through.” [/pullquote]

As much as the Lakers wanted to hold onto Howard, it seems that Jim maybe felt that D12 wasn’t made of the right stuff to be the face of the franchise. Before he arrived, it seemed like L.A. would be the perfect place for Howard to continue his career, yet it never felt like the big man was truly happy in Los Angeles.

The chance to play for the Lakers is a special opportunity and should be seen as an honor. If you don’t view it that way, it’s probably best that you move on.
