Many people blame Jim Buss for Mike D’Antoni’s hiring; they wrongly think that Jim has a problem with Phil Jackson. However, as far as we know, he doesn’t.
Not only was Jerry Buss the one who made the call to hire D’Antoni, but Jim has “no issue” with Jackson returning to the Lakers, according to Ric Bucher:
“We can call him at any time,” Jim said. “(GM) Mitch (Kupchak) has sat down with him several times, especially with the Dwight situation. I’d be more than happy to have him on a consultant basis. I don’t think we’re paying him and I don’t know if he has an official title. I have no idea if Jeanie wants to sit down and discuss that. But I have no issues with him coming back or having a role.”
I’m still not sure if I could see Phil returning to the Lakers at this point, especially while D’Antoni is in town – the two men have differently philosophies, and I’m uncertain whether they could successfully work together on a daily basis.
However, if something could be worked out, it’d be great to have Phil hold an official position with the purple and gold once again.
