Jim Buss says Wesley Johnson “couldn’t miss a shot” in his workout; thinks the Lakers might have a sleeper

During his introductory press conference last week, Wesley Johnson revealed that he’s been in Los Angeles since May, working on every aspect of his game. Apparently, the hard work has paid off.

According to Jim Buss, Johnson “couldn’t miss a shot” during a workout for the Lakers earlier this month. Here’s what Jim said last week on NBA TV:

[pullquote]Wesley Johnson, he came and worked out for us and he was sensational. He couldn’t miss a shot. You could see how long he is and how athletic – another guy that just fits the system. He was drafted fourth overall, so you know there’s potential there. D’Antoni likes the kid a lot, he’s gonna develop him. So, we might have a little sleeper there.[/pullquote]

Johnson has shown improvement in his game in recent times: in March this year, when he saw increased playing time, Wesley averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 34% from three. There is definitely some untapped potential there.

With Johnson playing in a system more suited to his style of play, he could have a break out year. If he doesn’t, the Lakers only invested a minimum contract and a roster spot in him. It’s a win-win situation for the purple and gold.
