Was this Julius Randle’s first rookie mistake?

On Monday afternoon, the Lakers held their annual Media Day. It’s a time when all the players turn up in their uniforms and do interviews while also posing for photos and shoot promos for the upcoming season.

Kobe Bryant, who was taking part in his 19th Media Day, turned up in a fresh pair of his Kobe 9 high-tops:

However, Randle did something a little unexpected. While the Kentucky product turned up at the Lakers’ practice facility in a pair of Kobe’s signature shoes…

…he decided to wear a purple pair of LeBrons during the actual Media Day festivities:

Randle has said all along that Bryant was his favorite player growing up, and he’s worn the Black Mamba’s kicks on a number of times in the past – he even rocked the Kobe 9s in college – so it was strange to see the 19-year-old wearing LeBron James’ signature shoes during such a high-profile event.

Then again, maybe the shoes are just super comfortable?

Either way, Kobe probably wasn’t all that happy about it.

At the Lakers’ training camp in 2011, Bryant went after the footwear choices of Andrew Goudelock and Derrick Caracter, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin:

However, Randle isn’t the first Laker to wear a pair of LeBrons.

Last season, Nick Young broke out a pair of “LeBron 1s” and ended up scoring 40 points while wearing them, so they obviously worked for Swaggy P.

Still, I’d imagine that Randle wearing The King’s kicks won’t turn out to be a regular thing, especially when there’s a seemingly unlimited supply of Kobes available at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo.
