Everyone knows Kevin Durant is the big fish in the free agency market this summer, but the Los Angeles Lakers will have other targets on their list, too.
The Lakers have to be ready for every scenario, and Sean Deveney from Sporting News has revealed a very interesting one.
Deveney says that if the Lakers miss out on Durant and he decides to join the Golden State Warriors as Adrian Wojnarowski mentioned a few months ago, the purple and gold would look to pursue Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli instead:
But coaching the Lakers would be an enormous opportunity for Walton, and he does fit as a potential recruiter of free agents. The Warriors have two key free agents this summer, forward Harrison Barnes and center Festus Ezeli, and either or both could come available if Golden State makes a big push to sign Durant. The Lakers would have them as targets should Durant pass.
For starters, Barnes and Ezeli will both be restricted free agents this summer. However, if the Warriors need to clear space in order to sign Durant, the Lakers could have the opportunity to ink Barnes and Ezeli to offer sheets that Golden State would probably not match.
Plus, if the Lakers sign Luke Walton to be their next head coach, they’d likely have an advantage over other teams when it comes to recruiting Barnes and Ezeli.
For now, the odds of this actually happening are slim, though if Durant does pass on the Lakers and decides to sign with Golden State, this is one scenario that could come to fruition in July.
