Free agency is still four months away, though that doesn’t stop the rumors from circling.
According to Steve Kyler from Basketball Insiders, Kevin Love, Rajon Rondo and Greg Monroe are all “said to be willing to meet with the Lakers this summer.”
All three players are set to be unrestricted free agents, and the Lakers should be able to offer one of them a maximum salary deal – that’s if they want to, of course.
Love has said on the record that he won’t be leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers, though that won’t stop the Lakers from chasing him this summer. The UCLA product has been on the purple and gold’s radar for quite some time.
Monroe may be a viable option for the Lakers. They’re said to have interest in him, and it’s not yet clear whether Stan Van Gundy will try to hold onto the big man once his contract expires in a few months’ time.
However, Rondo appears to be the Lakers’ best chance of landing a big name free agent this summer.
According to reports coming out of Dallas, it is “extremely unlikely” that the 29-year-old point guard with re-sign with the Mavericks this offseason.
The Lakers reportedly attempted to trade for Rondo in December but backed out of negotiations after the Boston Celtics demanded that their longtime rivals part with promising rookie Julius Randle.
Additionally, Kobe Bryant was spotted having breakfast with Rondo earlier this season while he was still a member of the Celtics. The two players have been good friends for some time.
