Lakers Rumors: Kurt Rambis interviews for team’s head coaching job

And so, the interviewing process continues.

According to multiple reporters, including Dave McMenamin from ESPN Los Angeles, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak met with Kurt Rambis last week to discuss the possibility of the 56-year-old taking over the team’s vacant head coaching position.

Rambis previously coached the Lakers during the 1998-99 season after Del Harris was fired and lead the purple and gold to a 24-13 record. Rambis also recently manned the sidelines in Minnesota for two seasons but struggled mightily, winning just 32 games during his time there.

All things considered, this interview was most likely more out of respect than anything else: After two failed coaching hires, the Lakers know they need to get it right this time, and a “retread” coach probably isn’t the best idea ant this point.

McMenamin also noted that the Lakers’ coaching search may continue into July, with one source informing the beat reporter that the quest to find the team’s next head coach would be “a long process.”
