As the 2014 NBA Draft edges closer and closer, the Los Angeles Lakers continue their pre-draft preparations.
On Tuesday, the purple and gold hosted Kentucky forward Julius Randle for a solo workout, and they’ll continue their scouting on Friday when they welcome back Marcus Smart and Elfrid Payton.
According to Chad Ford from ESPN, the Lakers intend to put Smart and Payton up against each other in a one-on-one workout. Ford says the Lakers “loved” Smart and Payton during their first visit and the team seemingly wants to get a better look at them this time around by placing them in a head-to-head contest.
Payton is currently projected to go eighth in the draft to the Sacramento Kings, according to ESPN, while Smart is slated to be destined for the purple and gold at seven.
Bleacher Report’s Kevin Ding says the Lakers “are increasingly intrigued” by Smart, who is expected to be one of the more NBA-ready point guards in this draft class.
Michigan’s Nik Stauskas is also expected to attend Friday’s workout session, according to Dave McMenamin from ESPN Los Angeles. Stauskas also attended the team’s previous workout with Payton and Smart at the beginning of the month.
