The rumors linking Pau Gasol to the Phoenix Suns were first reported a week ago today yet the Spaniard is still a Laker. That doesn’t mean he’ll still be wearing purple and gold after the February 20 trade deadline, though.
According to Mitch Lawrence from the NY Daily News, the Lakers and Suns are expected to resume trade talks before the deadline.
Lawrence confirms reports that the Lakers were asking for one of Phoenix’s better 2014 draft picks in exchange for Gasol. The Suns could own up to four picks in this year’s draft, including their own, yet it appears that L.A. were insisting on a selection that would be in the teens.
While it’s still unclear whether the Lakers would be able to receive that kind of compensation for Gasol at this point, it doesn’t hurt to ask for more than the purple and gold will likely receive in return for the Spaniard – it’s all a part of negotiations.
There’s still ten-plus days to go until the deadline, and it seems talks will likely heat up as the 20th edges closer. One would assume that the Lakers and Suns would be able to find some middle ground before or on that date if they’re both serious about pulling off a deal.
