Well, the day is finally here.
Yes, it’s July 1st and free agency is officially underway.
As expected, the Los Angeles Lakers called Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James as soon as the clock reached midnight on the East Coast, according to Ramona Shelburne and Dave McMenamin from ESPN Los Angeles.
While it’s unclear how the call went with James’ representatives, the Lakers already have a meeting set up with Anthony.
According to the report, the purple and gold will meet with Melo on Thursday in Los Angeles. Anthony is expected to meet with the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday and the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, per ESPN’s Marc Stein.
Phil Jackson will likely have the last meeting with Anthony on behalf of the New York Knicks.
The Lakers also reached out to Pau Gasol, per ESPN, though the team will need some clarity on the LeBron and Melo situation before making any decisions on signing other “second tier” free agents such as the Spaniard.
It was revealed on Monday that Kobe Bryant had already reached out to James and Anthony, though the prospect of both superstars joining the Lakers and playing for $16 million per season still appears to be a long shot at this point in time.
