The Los Angeles Lakers announced today that they have signed their 2013 second round draft pick Ryan Kelly. However, according to Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, the rookie’s contract is non-guaranteed:
Ryan Kelly's deal is one year, non-guaranteed. Kelly's had foot problems in recent years, won't be ready for start of Lakers' camp.— Mike Bresnahan (@Mike_Bresnahan) September 20, 2013
Seeing as the Lakers have given out partly-guaranteed deals to other newcomers this summer, Kelly may struggle to find a spot on the team if his foot takes time to heal. Lakers beat reporter Kevin Ding recently expressed doubt at Kelly’s chances to make the team, and the general feeling around his current health seems to be discouraging.
However, seeing as he has a unique skill set and heaps of potential, it would be great to see Kelly get healthy and earn some minutes on this team. Good luck, rook!
