Could Steve Nash move up the all-time assist ranks tonight?
According to Lakers beat writer Dave McMenamin, Nash is now just 12 assists shy of passing Mark Jackson for third place on the all-time list. Nash, who will likely be playing in his last game of the season tonight against the Mavericks, holds something to thrive for as he gets set to overtake Jackson’s assist total.
Sitting on top with the number one overall record is John Stockton with an astounding 15,806 assists. Below him at number two is newly-retired and current Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd with 12,091 assists. Finally, Mark Jackson comes in at number three with 10,334 assists on the board and in a spot ripe for the picking for the Canadian who is currently below him at 10,323 dimes.
Considering the circumstances at hand for Nash and the current situation with his NBA career at stake, it should be interesting to see how he delivers tonight for the Lakers and whether he plays in an inspired fashion to prove to the Lakers brass’ that he is well capable of returning as a top notch player next year. He’d be killing two birds with one stone if he were able to get the 12 dimes tonight and along the way, he’d make a final strong statement to the organization that he is still capable of playing some type of role on this team.
Barring any setbacks, registering 12 assists shouldn’t be too hard for Nash considering he dished out 10 dimes in his last game against the Trail Blazers on Tuesday. This should be an interesting game and I would recommend all Lakers fans watch, especially seeing as this potentially could be the last game Steve plays in the Association.
