Jared Dudley

Jared Dudley is an experienced NBA stalwart who has played for seven NBA franchises. So who does Jared Dudley play for this season? The answer is the LA Lakers. Some fans might be aware of Dudley from his social media presence, but others might have wondered why the Lakers have brought him in.

To make space for Anthony Davis, LeBron James and DeMarcus Cousins on the salary cap, the Lakers had to be wise with their spending. The Lakers also had to trust some of their youthful players to continue to develop their game during the season. In part, Jared Dudley was brought in for this reason.

Jared Dudley has played an important leadership role in supporting and guiding young talent over the last few seasons. That’s not to take away from what he adds on the hardwood. Throughout Jared Dudley’s career, he has proven himself to be a valuable addition to any NBA roster. The Lakers would have brought him in to add a tremendous amount of experience to the changing room, especially among the younger players.

It could turn out to be a very astute signing by the Lakers. With LeBron James presumably taking the position of small forward this season, Jared Dudley will be a more than willing rotation player in the Lakers schedule. Jared Dudley’s position has shifted and changed to where the team requires him, but he is perhaps best at small forward.

At 34 years of age, Dudley is entering the twilight of his career. He has built a great reputation over his career and is fondly remembered by each of his franchises. To understand this, it’s good to get a comprehensive overview of what type of player Jared Dudley is and what value he adds to the LA Lakers roster.

Early career

Jared Dudley was born in San Diego, California on 10 July 1985. He attended Horizon Christian Academy, where he won state titles in 2002 and 2003. After a successful high school career, he enrolled at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

Dudley was a starter for all four years of his college career. This included a 100 game streak and being named as one of two captains in his senior year. Over his college career, he averaged 15.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.

His senior year would be Dudley’s best. His performances earned him a place in the All-American second team as well as being named the 2007 ACC Player of the Year. In his senior season, he averaged 19 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

After his senior year, Dudley enlisted for the 2007 NBA Draft.

Charlotte Bobcats

Jared Dudley’s NBA draft pick was in the first round and 22nd overall. He was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats (who in 2014 changed their name back to the Charlotte Hornets). Jared Dudley immediately impressed the coaching staff and made his first starting appearance against the Boston Celtics on 24 November 2007. He would go on to average 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.

In his 2007-2008 rookie season, Dudley played mainly as a power forward. In the 2008-2009 season, Dudley moved to the small forward position. Halfway through his second season, on 18 December 2008, Dudley was traded to the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix Suns

Jared Dudley enjoyed his best NBA years during his first spell with the Phoenix Suns from 2008-2013. On the court, he recorded his best ever seasons and most starts, taking the Suns to the playoffs in 2010.

Off the court, Jared Dudley’s media presence grew, along with his camaraderie in the team. He created his own Jared Dudley news spinoff with his JMZ (a parody of TMZ) and JSPN (a parody of ESPN) videos on social media. In 2012 he won the NBA TV Big Award for his social media presence.

In the 2011-2012 season, Jared Dudley established himself as a first team starter for the Suns. In this season, he shifted position from small forward to shooting guard. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.

The following season, Jared Dudley was named one of two captains for the Phoenix Suns. Dudley would record a career high that season, when he scored 36 points against the New York Knicks on 27 December 2012.

Jared Dudley would be traded at the end of the season to the Los Angeles Clippers. He would return for a second spell from 2016-2018, but with less success. He played as a power forward but struggled with form in his final season with the Suns after returning from injury.

Los Angeles Clippers

Jared Dudley’s trade to the Los Angeles Clippers was finalized on 10 July 2013. The Clippers played Dudley in the small forward position. Dudley would only play one season with the Clippers. During the season, he averaged 6.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Dudley also played seven games for the Clippers in the playoffs.

Milwaukee Bucks

Jared Dudley was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks on 26 August 2014. Again showing his versatility and commitment to the team, Jared Dudley shifted position to shooting guard for the 2014-2015 season. During the season, Dudley averaged 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He would also play in six games in the playoffs.

There was a player option for the final year in Jared Dudley’s contract. Dudley opted in to remain with the Bucks for the 2015-2016 season. He would ultimately not play for the Bucks that season, as he was traded a month later to the Washington Wizards.

Washington Wizards

Jared Dudley became a Washington Wizard player on 9 July 2015. Dudley played the 2015-2016 season as a power forward. He averaged 7.9 points, 3.5 assists and 2.1 assists per game.

After the season, Dudley was traded to the Phoenix Suns for his second stint at the franchise before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets.

Brooklyn Nets

After a difficult two seasons with the Suns, Dudley was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on 20 July 2018. During the 2018-2019 season, he averaged 4.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. He would also represent the Nets in four matches during the playoffs.

Los Angeles Lakers

Lakers news headlines announced the arrival of Jared Dudley on 7 July 2019. For the younger Lakers, Jared Dudley brings a wealth of experience and leadership. He has already identified Kyle Kuzma as a player he would like to help develop.

At 34, Jared Dudley’s Lakers career might be brief. If he can help harness the talent of the younger players, he could make a lasting impression. With an exciting season ahead, Lakers fans will be hoping for another playoff season in this veteran’s career. To find out more about Dudley and the Lakers, follow the Lakerholicz website. NBA stats

Jared Dudley’s stats perhaps don’t give Dudley enough credit for what he brings behind the scenes. During his career, he has averaged 7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. If improving young talent were a stat, Dudley would be a league leader.
