Today, Marco Belinelli was fined $15,000 by the NBA for an apparent “obscene gesture” during Saturday’s Game 7 in Brooklyn. This gesture was started by Sam Cassell some years back and has been copied by a few players since then.
Our very own Kobe Bryant broke out the dance back in 2009 after hitting a clutch three-pointer versus the San Antonio Spurs. Unlike Belinelli, though, he wasn’t fined by the league.
I’m not sure if anyone has used the “big balls” gesture since Kobe in 2009, but the fact that Belinelli is being forced to pay up 15k just four years later is a little worrying: the league really seems to be going in a disappointing direction, where anything and everything that could be seen as slightly controversial or politically incorrect is deemed fine-worthy.
Anyway, enough of my rambling. Just got ahead and enjoy the greatness of the Black Mamba.
