Could Dante Exum fall to the Lakers at seventh overall in the draft on June 26th? It’s a possibility that still can’t be ruled out just yet.
According to Chad Ford from ESPN, the Orlando Magic (four) “really like” Exum, though they also have Marcus Smart and Noah Vonleh on their radar.
If the Magic pick Smart of Vonleh, there’s a possibility of Exum sliding to either the Boston Celtics (six) or Los Angeles Lakers (seven). Ford says that the Utah Jazz (five) “may take him too,” though Exum is “less excited” about the prospect of playing for the Salt Lake City based team.
Then there’s point guard Elfrid Payton who has been rising up draft boards in recent weeks, so much so that Ford says his “range actually starts with the Lakers at seven.”
Payton, who averaged 19.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game last season for the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, worked out for the Lakers last week.
However, despite all the buzz surrounding this draft class, there’s still a chance that the Lakers deal their upcoming lottery pick if they can find a willing trade partner: Ford notes that the Lakers – along with the Celtics and Sacramento Kings (eight) – are a “top three candidate” to trade their selection in the coming weeks.
