The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the middle of their first coaching search since Dr. Jerry Buss passed away in February 2013, so as you can imagine, things are being done a little differently this time around.
Not only are the franchise taking their time in selecting a new coach, they’re also using a different consulting process, too.
In the past, general manager Mitch Kupchak and head of basketball operations Jim Buss have worked together to find a head coach and would report their findings to Dr. Buss. Now, according to Mike Bresnahan and Broderick Turner from the L.A. Times, Mitch and Jim will keep Lakers president Jeanie Buss updated on their progress.
However, it’s not just Jeanie who will be involved in the process this time: According to the L.A. Times report, the other four Buss kids will all have a say on the final hire, too.
Yes, that means Joey, Jesse, Johnny Buss and Janie Buss Drexel will all be involved in the process once Mitch and Jim narrow down their long list of candidates, though the report notes that there won’t “necessarily be a vote, but it will be a [chance] for the other siblings to ask questions or voice any vehement objections.”
In theory, this makes sense seeing as the six siblings each have an equal share of the Jerry Buss family trust. Hopefully, though, it won’t turn out to be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.
The purple and gold’s search for a head coach likely won’t end anytime soon, with numerous reports stating that the team may not hire a candidate until sometime in July.
