Nick Young has a new goal: winning the Sixth Man of the Year award.
Swaggy P was demoted to the bench on Sunday night in order for Xavier Henry to enter the starting lineup. Instead of complaining about the move, Young made the most of his new opportunity and had a solid outing.
In just 21 minutes on the floor, Young scored 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
It was a fresh start for Young, who had been shooting just 6-of-22 through the Lakers’ first three games.
Seeing as Young now has a new role, he also has a new goal, according to ESPN Los Angeles’ Dave McMenamin:
It’s great for Young to have this mindset as opposed to being upset about being demoted to the bench.
The thinking behind the move was to give the starting unit more of a spark by inserting Henry (he scored 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting) while also giving Young a chance to play his style of game while coming off the bench.
It was only one game, but Mike D’Antoni’s plan worked perfectly on Sunday night. Let’s hope that Young’s new goal comes to fruition, too.
