Pau Gasol “really wants to stay in L.A.”

UPDATE: Seems the LA Times caught up with Gasol and got a direct quote from him today regarding the matter:

That contradicts the endless statements Gasol has made that he’d like to remain a Laker. He reiterated that stance again Tuesday during a visit at  Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“My position is still the same,” Gasol told The Times. “I still would love to be a part of the Lakers and continue to be here to help the team win more championships as soon as possible. It’s out of my control and it’s out of my hands, no matter what.”

I wouldn’t write off Sam Smith’s article just yet, though. Although Pau’s preference is to play in Los Angeles, there’s probably a few cities he’d be comfortable playing in. Who knows, the Lakers may even have a list of places he’d be happy to be traded to.

Pau knows things are going to get pretty crazy rumor-wise in the next month or so, too:

“There’s a lot of rumors,” Gasol said. “Different rumors, all kinds of rumors. Once the [NBA] draft gets closer [on June 28], all kinds of stuff still again will come up.”

Yesterday the news broke from Sam Smith that Pau Gasol apparently would be cool with playing for the Chicago Bulls. Well, while that might be true, Jesús Sánchez – a Spanish reporter – reiterates the fact that Gasol wants to stay in Los Angeles:

For those of you that don’t speak Spanish (I’m one of them) the above tweet roughly translates to:

Sam Smith can say whatever he wants on the future of @ paugasol, but Pau really wants to stay in LA, and be clothed.

Now, that’s using Google Translate. Not a bad attempt at translating, apart from the end – I’d imagine Pau would like to be clothed wherever he plays. Luckily, HoopsHype have a better translation:

Sam Smith can say whatever he wants about the future of @paugasol, but Pau really wants to stay in L.A. and feel supported there.

That makes more sense. Sánchez also goes onto say that Gasol would like to play for a winning team for the rest of his career, which is hardly surprising, and is also probably why the Bulls are a preferred destination for Pau. He’d just rather play in Los Angeles if it was up to him. Unfortunately, it isn’t.
