VIDEO: Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki play the “What if?” game in episode 4 of The Finish Line

In 2004, Steve Nash left the Dallas Mavericks for the Phoenix Suns after Mavs owner Mark Cuban refused to match Phoenix’s offer.

Cuban came to the conclusion that Nash’s back wouldn’t hold up much longer – yes, the Canadian was even having health issues then – and therefore he decided to let the future two-time MVP head back to the team that drafted him in 1996.

Leaving Dallas was tough for Nash, who grew extremely close to Dirk Nowitzki during his tenure with the Mavs.

During episode 4 of Grantland’s “The Finish Line, Nash and Nowitzki meet for dinner and play the “What if?” game.

One of the questions Nash asked Nowitzki was whether he’d win a ring if he stayed in Dallas. Another was whether Dirk would retire if he were in Nash’s shoes.
